Common Sales Interview Questions (and How to Answer them)

Common Sales Interview Questions (and How to Answer them) The job interview is the most nerve-wracking part of the job application process. In the sales industry, it’s also filled with abstract and non-abstract questions that can put your skills under a lot of pressure. © Shutterstock | baranqTo help calm down the nerves, below are some of the most common sales interview questions, what they are actually testing and tips on how to best answer them.TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF?What’s tested? The above question tends to be the first thing interviewers ask. The aim is to find out more about your specific qualifications, your work history and your career goals. The ideal answerThe question is your first chance to make a good impression. You should keep your answer short; yet include enough relevant information to impress the interviewer. The focus should be on the key qualifications and skills required in the specific role. Therefore, you should know about the main things the employer is looking for information that can be found in the job description.Furthermore, also highlight your career objectives and relate them to the job on offer. You don’t have to include everything or explain everything; the interviewer will ask follow-ups on the most interesting points.Example answers“I’m a Business graduate of UCLA and I’ve worked as a sales assistant in a technology company for eight years. I’m very enthusiastic about my work, which had let me to pursue sales. I recently had an experience where I managed to track down a deal a customer was looking for from China, by using contacts I gained during my gap year in Beijing. I like going the extra mile.”“I’ve been working in Customer Service for five years now, but my passion has always been in sales. I get along with people very well and have honed my communication skills in my current role. I was appointed as manager two years ago, a role where I’ve been able to make some sales as a temporary replacement worker and have realized the industry is where my passion lies.”[slideshare id=53325246doc=merged2-150929132317-lva1-app6892w=640h=330]WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SALES ACHIEVEMENT?What’s tested? The interviewer isn’t that interested in your heroics, but the answer is more abou t getting a tangible idea of your expertise, experience and skills. The ideal answerThe aim is to impress the interview with a real life example of using your best skills to your benefit in terms of sales. You want to add enough detail to your story, instead of simple answering, “Well, I once sold 1,000 laptops in a week”.Structure you answer around P.P.C.S. This means: outlining the Place, explaining the Problem, mentioning the Customer, and including the Steps you took to make the sale.Furthermore, if your achievement was awarded, recognized or you just received a pat on the back from the boss, don’t forget to mention it!Example answer“I was working as a sales person in a coffee shop four years ago, when the company was approached by a quick order of 100 coffees and donuts for a nearby meeting. We were low on staff and had only about 50 pre-baked donuts left. The customer was from a nearby business and the sale could potentially mean increases in business, as we’d been co nsidering negotiating a lunch-break deal with them. Since I knew we would need more staff, and would have to sell them other treats in place of the donuts, I quickly asked the other floor person to call for the manager to ask him come help us. I also negotiated with the customer for the option of including our newest cinnabons to the order, to make it a 50-50 split. He agreed and we were able to get the event served on time.”WHEN DID YOU FAIL REACHING A SALES GOAL AND WHY?What’s tested? As well as asking for a positive experience, the interviewer is likely to quiz you over a negative experience you’ve had in terms of sales. The focus is not on the failure, but rather, to examine how you handle failure and the efforts you took to learn from these mistakes. The ability to learn and develop your skills is important in sales, as you won’t always succeed in your efforts. The ideal answerBe truthful in your answer, but don’t hurt your chances of getting the job. This means finding a moment when you didn’t reach your goals, but not choosing a moment when you screwed up everything. You don’t want to pick an event when a customer or the company suffered because of your actions. The answer should be structured around the following points: outlining the situation, the goal you had, the things that went wrong and the outcome. Finally, you want to point out the lessons you learned. The focus should be on identifying the steps that led to the failure and the ways you’ve changed your approach ever since.Example answer“In my job in retail sales, we had an opportunity to pitch to a major client. Our team was going up against another team and the goal was to make the best sales pitch to land the deal. Unfortunately, the team lacked leadership and I or anyone else didn’t really feel like stepping up. Because of it, I believe the team lacked direction and we didn’t quite know who would be doing what. As a result, our pitch wasn’t as focused, researched or plan ned as the other team’s and we lost the competition. This really taught me a great deal about leadership and how you can’t just let things be. After that I’ve definitely become much more driven to take the lead if needed and have taken a course on management to ensure I know how to lead better.”WHY DO YOU WANT TO WORK IN SALES?What’s tested?By asking this question, the interviewer is looking to understand your motivations. Essentially, they want to know if you are the right person for the role and whether you have the ambition to succeed in the role. The ideal answerYou shouldn’t just simply state you like working in sales. Instead, focus on the aspects that most draw you into the industry. It is talking to people, helping others, exceeding your own expectations and so on?Illustrate your motivation by using past examples. It could be something about your previous role or any other situation where you’ve showcased your ability and passion to sell.Example answers“I’ve been passionate about making a sale since I was eight and started by first lemon stand. My family says I showed true determination even then, something which I’ve been noticed for by my managers later in life. I just love the challenge of learning about a product and finding out a reason different customers would want it.”“I feel like I’m a very helpful guy and to be working in sales is the best way to make others happy and to give them what they want. I like making contact with my clients and understand what they are looking for â€" when I was working at my previous job, I received the Smile of the Month award for four months in a row.”WHAT IS THE MOTIVATION FOR YOU TO SELL?What’s tested?Similarly, to the previous question, the interviewer here wants to understand your motivations. Furthermore, the interviewer is interested in your character. The ideal answerDon’t give a generic answer, but focus on your personality and individual talent. Think about what are the unde rlying characteristics that mean you are passionate about sales. Perhaps it is your love of succeeding, your competitive nature to beat the odds, or your thirst for helping other people. In addition, if you can, you want to highlight how the company you are applying to work with can help you be even more motivated. For instance, perhaps they offer a training program, which would fit with your passion for learning more about the craft.Example answers“To me the biggest motivation is the challenge of getting the sales pitch right. It’s about understanding the client’s needs and finding a way for them to be met with the product.”“The ability to learn more has always driven me. I think there’s always more to learn when it comes to sales and I find the approach [company name] has with its continuous training program to be one of the reasons behind the success of the business.”Little add-on on why should we hire you? WHAT DON’T YOU LIKE ABOUT SALES?What’s tested?Your passi on and motivation will also be tested by asking you about the things you might not like about sales. The ideal answerYou shouldn’t answer this question with “Nothing bothers me in sales”. On the other hand, this doesn’t mean you should necessarily just pick any random aspect of the industry. It’s important to understand the aspect most important in the role and the company you are applying for and avoid naming it.Therefore, you could name something such as “I’m not a big fan of the business fair environment, as it can be difficult to make a sale there”. But only if the role you want to be hired in doesn’t require you to do this.Example answers“I’ve always been a bit nervy about selling over the phone. I feel I work much better, when I have that face-to-face connection. I think, personally, visual cues are important when making a sale.” “Well I’m overall rather happy with the industry, but if there’s one thing I’d change it would be the paperwork certai n positions require. In my previous role in selling dishwashers, we had to do quite a bit of paperwork after sales. I don’t think the actual aspect of having paperwork is bad, but I think it could be much more automated to guarantee you have more time to sell.”WHY DO YOU WANT TO LEAVE YOUR CURRENT ROLE?What’s tested? It’s extremely common for interviewers to quiz about your decision to leave your previous job, especially for higher-level roles. The interviewer wants to know your motivations behind the move to be able to see whether you are applying for the role for the right reasons. The ideal answerThe one single thing you need to remember is to never talk negatively about your current employer. Even if you don’t like the work environment or you actually despise your boss, don’t start trash talking.Furthermore, focus on highlighting things you’ve learned in your previous job and how these would translate well into your new job. After that, you can highlight the opportun ities the new role would have for you and how it would help develop your skills further. Don’t discuss things like financial rewards or benefits.Example answers“I’ve worked in my current role for five years and feel I’ve learned a lot about sales. I worked my way up from a delivery driver to sales manager, but feel like it’s time for new challenges. The position on offer here would give me a bigger role as a sales team manager and therefore, new opportunities to sell and improve.”“I love to work at [company name] and I’ve been surrounded by a great team. I was able to lead the way to a more social media-based sales approach for the company, but feel like this aspect has now reached its limit. However, I enjoy this part of sales and the opportunity here would let me develop this aspect further.” HOW TO STAY AWARE OF THE TARGET MARKET?What’s tested? The interviewer will also ask you sales-specific question to test your understanding of the industry. The aim is to ex plore your understanding of the product you are required to sell and whether you understand the company’s target market. The ideal answerShowcase your awareness of who is the customer for the particular business and the value proposition offered. You also want to touch on the competition in the industry.Mention where the market is at the moment and how this can be used to better understand the customer. This can be things, such as social media, blogs, publications and business fairs. You want to describe the social, business and technology trends impacting the market.Example answer“As the customer base at this coffee shop is mainly coming from the nearby university, I think the best strategy is to continue providing value for money. I think I would emphasize social media in finding out more and staying on top of the trends. It would also be a good idea to work closely with the student union. I think the challenge is to offer additional bonuses to just the coffee, as student finan ces are always stretched.”WHAT SALES CYCLES ARE YOU MOST COMFORTABLE WITH?What’s tested? The interview will test your industry expertise further, especially in terms of understanding the sales position of the employer. The ideal answerDepending on the business and the role you are interviewing for, you want to focus your answer on either short or long sales cycles.Outline the positives of both cycles briefly and mention the expertise you have on both or either of the cycles. Try to favour the cycle position used by the company, but don’t talk too negatively about either.Example answer“I have experience in both: during my first sales job in a furniture store our aim was to try and create a short sales cycle. I liked having the opportunity to meet a lot of prospects in a short time and push myself for a quicker sale. On the other hand, I also experienced the longer short cycle when I moved into the kitchen unit department, where the cycle tended to be longer. The company sold pu rpose-built products, so we often travelled on-site to meet with clients. It provided more time to get to know the client and build rapport, but my personal selling style suites shorter cycles better, as I’m quick on my feet and like to outline the benefits of the products efficiently.”WHEN TO STOP GOING AFTER A CLIENT?What’s tested?Your tenacity to make sales will also be tested, as well as your ability to respect customer boundaries. The company wants to know you aren’t someone who’ll stop trying after the first ‘no’, but that you also won’t go after clients in a harassing manner. The ideal answerThe answer you give should be based on finding a balance. You want to first highlight your understanding of good customer service: not pushing it too far in order to ensure company reputation isn’t jeopardized. The second part of your answer should focus on your tenacity. You want to highlight your tactic of trying a different approach with the customer and engaging them i n a longer conversation, which could reveal you the things that might lead to eventual sale.Example answer“I think it’s important to respect customer boundaries. You don’t want to push too hard, as it can damage your reputation and make the customer less likely to purchase the product in the future. However, I think you can’t stop with the first ‘no’. I generally try to ask questions about the customer even before I suggest buying the product. This allows me to understand what the customer’s needs are and I can highlight the benefits of the product. I’ll generally like to hold the conversation going for at least 10 minutes before deciding if the customer is likely to buy or not.”WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT: CULTIVATING CUSTOMER RELATIONS OR GOING AFTER NEW CLIENTS? WHY?What’s tested? You’ll also be tested on your overall understanding of what helps a business succeed in terms of sales. The ideal answerYou should tailor your answer around the company’s needs. Think beforehand whether the company’s focus is on new clients or on keeping existing clients happy? You also want to include the benefits of both approaches to your answer. You want to consider the cost/benefit analysis in deciding the suitable approach. Furthermore, aim to highlight the importance of balance and explain why it’s helpful to avoid excluding either group entirely.Example answer“Well, I think in terms of online retail, it’s essential to hunt for new customers. It can help maximize your sales, as well as help your brand recognition. You definitely want to get more people talking online. But cultivating customer relations is definitely more crucial in industries, such as my current job, since we rely on subscription-based sales. So, there’s definitely an element of calculating the costs and benefits.”WHAT DO YOU THINK WE COULD DO BETTER?What’s tested? Finally, one of the most common questions interviewers ask relates to your ability to be creative and entrepreneur ial in the world of sales. The question “What can we do better?” is not necessarily looking for the next big business idea. Instead, the interviewer will provide you one more chance to prove your worth and to highlight your understanding of the business. The ideal answerHighlight your understanding of the company and show your creative side. Don’t talk about the company doing things ‘wrong’, but rather focus on the future challenges in the industry as a whole. You want to first highlight the positive things the company’s sales department does and next, outline a few challenges the industry is facing. You should base your answer in ways the company could meet these challenges. This type of answer highlights your understanding of the business and the industry.Example answer“I think [company name] has efficiently responded to the challenges technology has brought. I find the market research the company has done one of the best in the country and I believe this meticulous ap proach has been behind the company’s success. But I think organizations need to be careful with efficiency, especially in sales. I think the focus on including different departments into the sales process is a big challenge. I think the utilization of big data and better reporting are widely needed in the industry as a whole.”BONUS TIPS FOR A COMMON SALES INTERVIEW CHALLENGEFinally, you are most likely going to have to sell something to the interviewer, as a test of your selling ability. Check out the below video on tips on how to nail this classic sales ‘question’: IN CONCLUSIONAs the above shows, the selection of question ranges a lot in sales interviews. The most important thing is to prepare for your interview well and to conduct enough research on the role and the company you are applying for.If you know enough about the company, the job position and you’ve thought about your suitability for the role, you can nail down all of the trickiest of questions.

Our writers will create an original "Trading for Options Under Different Strategies" essay for you Create order Introduction: Different types of strategies can be used for hedging including: Principal protected notes Trading an option and the underlying asset Spreads Three selected companies are the Apple, Google and Intel Corporation. The above three strategies are discussed in detail with respect to each company. Strategies: Strategy 1: The first strategy that was applied through the interactive brokersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ application was for the Apple Company. The reason why I choose this Trade: Apple Inc. (Apple) designs and manufactures the markets mobile communication and media devices, personal computers, and portable digital music players, and a variety of related software, services, peripherals, networking solutions, and third-party digital content and applications. Its stocks show a strong position in the market due to the diversified business of the Apple Company. The Companys products and services include iPhone, iPad, Mac, iPod, Apple TV, a portfolio of consumer and professional software applications, the iOS and OS X operating systems, iCloud, and a variety of accessory, service and support offerings. The Company also delivers digital content and applications through the iTunes Store, App StoreSM, iBookstoreSM, and Mac App Store. The Company distributes its products worldwide through its retail stores, online stores, and direct sales force, as well as through third-party cellular network carriers, wholesalers, retailers, and value-added resellers. In February 20 12, the Company acquired app-search engine Chomp. Below is the detail of the companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s stock from May 2013 to 1 May 2014. The closing price is $592.3 which is quite risky if we trade in this stock. The reason of choosing to trade in Apple stock is due to the fact of increasing stock price of Apple shares since May 2013 up to now. What was worked? On April 30, 2014, I bought a call option at 492.5 USD which was the share price and would expire at 2 May 2014. On the same date, I bought Apple stock of 100 shares at the price of 592.34 USD. On the same day I sold 100 shares of Apple at 596 USD each. On May 1, 2014, I sold call option for 99.2 USD. The overall profit realized is low because of that call option. What did not work? Instead of buying one call option, I bought 2 call contracts and the realized profits was low because of that extra call option. I should have to sell 100 shares of Apple which would increase my profits instead of buying a call option and selling them together with the stock. Improvement in the trade: Instead of buying 100 shares of Apple stock, I would have to buy all 300 shares and sell them at a high price which would eventually produce a good profit on the other 200 shares. Instead I can use the combination of an option with the zero- coupon bonds which is called the principal protected note strategy. This strategy is good for conservative investors where the return is dependent on the performance of the stock. Here the Apple stock is performing well and this strategy can produce a good return for the investor. In this case the value of the principal is protected i.e. (300*592.34) 177,702 USD would be protected and grown too because zero coupon bond pays principal as well as strike price of the call option. This would be the case if the price of the portfolio goes up. But if the portfolio goes down, the value of the option would have no value but the original principal would be protected. Strategy 2: Trading an option and the underlying asset: The second strategy is trading an option with the stock and this is applied for the Google stock. The reason why I choose this Trade: The reason why I choose google is because it is the biggest company in IT sector. Google is one of the richest company in terms of revenues and net profits. Its price earnings ratio is 27.6 and its earnings per share is 19.09. So it is a healthy company to invest in its stock. Its estimated target share price for one year is 1324.63 USD. The chart above shows the last day activity and one year activity of the stock which is showing a deficit closing. As can be seen from the chart the closing price of the day for google stock is 526.66 USD which is also a risky stock with more returns. Overall the google stock has shown a moderate variations in its price over the year. What was worked? On April 30, 2014, I bought 300 shares of google at the price of 536.15 USD. I would need to hold the stock of google because the unrealized loss which would be realized if I would sell it is 2,228 USD. What did not work? Call option need not be implemented because of the lower price of the google stock. The shares would not be purchased at this time because the google shares are already traded in loss. Improvement in the trade: The number of strategies can be used for this single stock. We can use writing a covered call option where in which portfolios consists of a long positions in stock and a short position in the European call option. There is a protection for investors from a long position stock on the payoffs from a short call. The short call payoffs becomes necessary when there is a sharp rise in the stock prices of the google. If the option would have been exercised, I would sell all the 300 shares of the google stock at the strike price. Now I would have to wait for the option to be exercised so that I can sell whole of my stock. Strategy 3: Spreads: The third strategy of spread is applied to Intel Incorporation. The reason why I choose this Trade: The reason of choosing the Intel Incorporation is that its share prices have shown a decent trend from previous two months. In Jan 24, 2014, it was at 24.58 USD and today on 30 April, it closes on 26.69 USD. This portfolio of investment is not as risky as the previous two portfolios. Previously Intel Corporation misjudges the mobile wave of tablets and smartphones but now it is recovering well and its stock prices are the most consistent ones in the stocks of all the trades in the U.S. They are now in the wearable technology which triples from 10 billion USD to 30 billion USD in 2013. The stock of Intel is about 28% in previous year and its revenues are at 53 billion USD. Due to all these facts I choose the Intel Incorporation as the third company for stock trading. What was worked? I bought 100 shares of Intel Incorporation at call option of 26.74 USD I sold 100 shares of Intel Incorporation at call option of 26.70 USD. So the loss is 4 USD. What did not work? The call option would need to be implemented in combination for Intel Incorporation stock so that Profit can be obtained from the combination of the stock of two call option. Improvement in the trade: Different options should be implemented for this Intel stock such as different options with different strike prices should be used. This is called the butterfly spread. This spread can be created by buying a call option with relatively low strike price and buying the call option with relatively high strike prices and selling the two call options with the strike price that is in between the two high and low prices. Conclusion: A number of common trading strategies involve a single option and the underlying stock. For example, writing a covered call involves buying the stock and selling a call option on the stock; a protective put involves buying a put option and buying the stock. The former is similar to selling a put option; the latter is similar to buying a call option. Principal-protected notes can be created from a zero-coupon bond and a European call option. They are attractive to some investors because the issuer of the product guarantees that the purchaser will be receive his or her principal back regardless of the performance of the asset underlying the option. A number of factor may affect the share prices of the companies and corporations and one would need to be updated with the changes in the prices of stock. These changes may occur due to the change in events such as for technology companies changes in technologies would be kept in mind before making any trade in that company. Mo stly mobile companies and electronic companies are the most risky companies in terms of stock purchasing and selling and financial data for these companies should be kept in mind specially the financial statements. There is also a need to get experience from the market by working in trading companies and brokerage houses. The starters should begin with the stocks of the company rather than investing in indices, swaps and futures which are most risky and volatile in nature. The tradeoff for dealing with futures canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be compared with the tradeoff for the shares or stocks.

The Effects Of Media On Our Lives - 1543 Words

It has been a long time we are living with the media. Has media affected our behavior negatively? This issue – the negative influence of media on our life, has been debated since the media evolved. Media, is not only news as many would think, but also things like movies, TV shows, music, and surprisingly, even the video games are now a major part of media. All these media divarication play no negative roles on our lives for some people. However, I believe for each one of media’s divarication there is a specific violent reaction in our real lives. First, media is one of the extensive factors for the violence in our behavior. According to Craig A. Walter Whitman Essays - Brooklyn Eagle, Mystics, Walt Whitman

Walter Whitman Walter Whitman Through the history of the United States there have been a countless numbers of poets. With them came an equal number of writing styles. Certainly one of the most unique poets to write life's story through his own view of the world and with the ambition to do it was Walter Whitman. Greatly criticized by many readers of his work, Whitman was not a man to be deterred. Soon he would show the world that he had a voice, and that it spoke with a poet's words. Afoot and lighthearted I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me, the long brown path before me leading wherever I choose. Thus Whitman began his "Song of the Open Road". This paper will attempt to describe his life and poetry in a way that does justice to the path he chose. He was a man who grew up impoverished, who wrote from his experiences, and who tried to lift his fellow men above life's trivialities. These are the points to be discussed on these pages. To know the essence of Walter Whitman, you would have to understand the heart of his writing. For he is in his pen. Walter Whitman was born in West Hills, Long Island, New York, on May 31, 1819 . He did not have much opportunity for education in his early life. His parents were mostly poor and illiterate- his father a laborer, while his mother was a devout Quaker. Whitman was one of nine children and little is known about his youth except that two of his siblings were imbeciles. No wonder he demonstrated such an insight for life in his poems. In 1830, at the age of eleven, he worked as an office boy for a lawyer, where he learned the printing trade. Whitman would soon take up teaching at various schools in Long Island. He also engaged in carpentry and house building while he edited newspapers. His early years seemed to show an active interest in working with the public. Whitman at one time accepted a job with a New Orleans newspaper, and in doing so exposed himself to a great deal of the country. Getting to New Orleans required traveling over the Cumberland Gap and down rivers, of which he later wrote. America seemed to be both his home and inspiration. In "Calamus", part of his single book, Leaves of Grass, he writes of Louisiana as a "live oak growing", thus showing the joy he felt in everything he saw . In short, Whitman lived trough the nation's heroic age, at a time when people had to be (or seemed to be) a little more than life-size to accomplish all the deeds they undertook. It was natural that Whitman, with his genius and metaphysical inclinations, should have drifted into journalism, a profession that could make some demands on his native endowments. As much as he was a traveler, he was also a man of the people. In one of his reviews, he described himself as"never on platforms amid the crowds of clergymen, or professors, or aldermen, or congressmen- rather down in the bay with pilots in their pilot boats- or off on a cruise with fishers in a fishing smack- or writing on a Broadway omnibus, side by side with the driver- or with a band of loungers over the open grounds of the country- fond of New York and Brooklyn- fond of the life of the great ferries." Whitman obviously felt a kinship with his country, and later exhibited this in his writings. He also was not a man to follow others. "Self-reliant, with haughty eyes, assuming to himself all the attributes of his country, steps Walt Whitman into literature, talking like a man unaware that there was ever hitherto such a production as a book, or such a being as a writer". Whitman's major work, Leaves of Grass, was first published on the fourth of July in 1855. He was thirty-six years old, not yet a published writer, and could not find any company willing to take a chance on his unusual style. His experience in newspapers allowed him to help publish his work himself, even setting up some of the type and distributing the first edition. To get a decent start, Whitman even went so far as to write complimentary unsigned reviews of his book which he had placed in the newspapers- "An American bard at last! "- his own words of his first work, showing his audacity to be well thought of. Whitman wrote only one

Assessment of Historical Growth in the US Economy Essay

Assessment of Historical Growth in the US Economy - Essay Example The Constant dollar GDP is also known as the 'Real GDP represents the quantity of economic output. Real GDP is always used in measuring the overall rate at which an economy is grown. The current dollar GDP represents the market value of goods and services produced in a period in a country. In order to solve our question of whether the USA is enjoying the longest continuous expansion of its economy since modern records began the best solution is to retrieve the GDP figures of the US economy over a period up to which the records are available. And compare them to check for the trend of the growth in the US economy expressed through the GDP figures. Usually such kinds of economic data can be obtained from the website of Bureau of Economic Analysis. (BEA) An analysis of the US GDP is expressed in chained dollars in the BEA Website for the period from 1929 to 2006 last quarter. An analysis of the historical GDP figures indicate that the US economy has been continuously showing an increasing trend only except for some years where it shows a negative trend. Especially in the years where there were recessions of the economy the GDP has been continuously growing. From the following Chart it can be observed that the growth of the US economy suffered slightly during the years 1974, 1982 and 1991. These are the known periods of recession where the US economy was recoding a negative growth of -0.51 percent, -1.97percetn, and -0.17percent respectively which are very negligible. Apart from these small deviations in the near past the US economy has been continuously doing well. The observed data is also produced below to show that in the real values also the GDP of the US economy is growing continuously except for intermittent reversals to negative figures. These negative figures are not significant except for certain years like 1932 and 1946 where the negative growth is showing high figures -14.94 percent in 1932 and -12.39 in the year 1946. Chart Showing the Growth in the US Economy From the chart it may also be observed that there has been continuous positive growth in the US GDP figures during the longest spell of year 1992 to year 2006. Summative Written Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Summative Written - Assignment Example The paper will explore the legal principles involved in the case with the aim of offering a legal advice to the employee. Facts of the case Mathew, an employee of pharmaceutical company, Medx ltd, was recently involved in an accident. He has worked as a warehouse operative for the pharmaceutical company for over 20 years. The company deals in and store heavy boxes containing its goods. Based on the scope of its operations, the company’s policy is that its employees are supposed to wear protective helmets while on duty. In December 2011, Mathew who was in good health and had never been involved in an accident leading to any injury was involved in an accident while on duty at the pharmaceutical company. A heavy box from an overhead wooden pallet rack fell and hit him to unconsciousness. He sustained several injuries including bruises on his face, a cut on his head, which left a permanent scar, dislocation of his right shoulder, and injuries to his leg. Mathew has been forced out of work for four months and medical report indicates that he may not be able to work for another six months. He also suffers continuous headache. He has a family with a running mortgage to finance. Legal issue Obligations under law of contract One of the essential legal elements in the case is the existence of a legal relationship between Mathew and MedX as defined by his employment contract. His relationship with MedX Ltd falls within the scope of an employment contract. Pozgar and Santucci defines an employment contract as an â€Å"agreement between an employee and an employer† in which special terms such as remuneration, the scope of work and working hours are defined (Pozgar and Santucci, 2009, p. 61). The agreement is therefore regulated by the law of contract under contract of service (Pozgar and Santucci, 2009, p. 61). A contract is an agreement, between parties, that legally enforces their rights and obligations. When parties enter into a contract, they expressly cre ate conditions and warranties that regulate their relationship by laying down responsibilities and obligation of each party. Essential elements of a valid contract as defined through agreement, consideration, and intention to create legal obligations further binds parties to a contract to implied conditions in their trade. Contracts are therefore subject to legislations such as labour law statutes (Goldman and Sigismond, 2010, p. 123). Employee’s safety at workplace Implied conditions in contracts of service impose a responsibility on employers to ensure safety of their employees while at the work place. The occupational safety and health act is an example of such legislations that aims at ensuring welfare of employees. One of the provisions of the act is that an employer has the duty to minimize and possibly mitigate any health hazard within the work place. These threats can either be biological leading to illnesses or physical, leading to injuries. Failure to take necessary measures makes an employer liable to his or her employee for any injury or sickness suffered because of conditions at the work place. The act , with this respect, empowers government agencies to facilitate its implementation as was observed in the case of Donovan v Dewey, 452 U.S 594, 101 s. Cr 2534 (1981) (Ullmann, 2004, p. 339). Further, employers are charged with the responsibility of not only ensuring safety of their

Similarities In My Papas Waltz English Language Essay

Similarities In My Papas Waltz English Language Essay The issue of family relationship is a valuable standard for the understanding of literary works, mainly those which feature the connection between a boy and his father. Family relationship is significant in portraying how a child uses fantasy to avoid his attitudes toward his parents. It suggest father and son relationship by means of poetry in disguised and discerning hints can be a successful means to reflect the hidden and emotionally based childhood experiences. In several respects, the poems My Papas Waltz, by Theodor Roethke and Those Winter Sundays, by Robert Hayden fall in this category. The connection between the child and his father in these poems offers a means of discovering and interpreting the setting, tone and theme among other elements aspects of poetry. In My Papas Waltz, a drunken father turns home at night foul of whisky and starts to dance with the narrator, in what is believed to be a regular episode (Fong79). The speaker in Those Winter Sundays also remembers a regular event during his childhood, when his father rises early on Sunday mornings (Rampersad and Herbold 261). Most readers see the poem My Papas Waltz and Those Winter Sundays, as opposites; however they are alike in several significant ways. My Papas Waltz describes a father and child together enjoying time in a waltz. The poems theme swings around memories of a child concerning his father. It is set in a family home and is narrated by a young boy. The poem has four stanzas, perhaps to reflect the structure of their waltz (McKenna1). It is likely that the father has just gotten home after a long days work, and dances with the child before going to bed. Those Winter Sundays cautiously remembers the fathers sacrifices on a Sunday morning, besides his constant labor on weekdays. Emotions and memories form the theme of this poem. The poem is narrated from a sons perspective, and set in a cold dwelling during winter. The first point is that the father gets dressed early when the house is unheated and cold. He calls the son to wake up after the fire has been lit and the house is warm. He also polishes the childs shoes (Gallagher 1). However, the relationship is described by elements like chronic angers, which may imply that po ssibly the routine and maybe poverty had strained family affiliations. The cold in the house described by Hayden is a recurring hardship that the father must endure: Sundays too my father got up earlyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦in the blue black cold, (1-2). In the whole poem, the author employs imagery and other figurative language forms, consistent setting along with flashback techniques to bring out a picture of father-son relationship for the reader (Rampersad and Herbold 261). The actions of the father are channeled in bettering the life of his family. However, No one ever thanked him (5). Even though the father shows his efforts by sacrificing personal comfort for the childs sake, the boy does not understand the stern and simple love expressed by the father. In addition, maternal influence is not emphasized in both poems. The mother is does mentioned in My Papas Waltz with My mothers countenance could not unfrown itself (7-8). However, similar to Those Winter Sundays the maternal parent does not feature in any significant way (Fong81). The boys in both cases m ay have anticipated more than was given to them. Especially, the concept of more love; yet they failed to understand that their fathers simply demonstrated this affection in a different manner. Nevertheless, a holy bond exists in the father-son relationship. This connection is the bottom line of both poems. The speakers in the two poems are actually adults who are analyzing their past and articulating their reactions to their fathers. Hence both narrations express nostalgia. Likewise, the narrators are expressing their appreciation and love to their father, which had not been shown in the past. For instance, Roethke writes about a father who would dance daily with the boy. During the dance, the boy would occasionally miss a step and his ear would painfully scrap his fathers belt (McKenna 1). Though sometimes painful, it was a memorable thing for the son. The poem is authored in a happy tone and light hearted throwback to the narrators boyhood days. Those Winter Sundays illustrates a more sad and dark tone. The speaker remembers how the father woke up and started to work Sundays too my father got up earlyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦/ No one ever thanked him (1-5). Yet, the message remain s related, that the father worked hard to keep the house warm and support his family (Gallagher1). Therefore, even though this poem is much sadder, it still encompasses a somewhat loving feeling. Both narrators now realize the significance of their fathers efforts as envision in the choice of words. So as to present the father-son relationship, the writers utilize words with the same connotation. The reader is able to find out that the families spoken of in both poems are not wealthy. Roethke, in describing the father writes With a palm caked hard by dirt, (14). Likewise, Hayden in illustrating the impact of the work on the father uses words like with cracked hands that ached, (3). Fathers in both cases become soiled due to their occupations, which can be assumed not to be that great. Furthermore, the choices of words in both narrations convey pain to the audience. Words such as battered, scraped, clinging cold splintering, breaking, and chronic angers could comprise a single poem (Fong 82: Rampersad and Herbold 261). But they are adjectives utilized by both writers in their separate poems. Each word passes over some level of painful image in the mind of readers. The order of words the two poems play an important role too. Rather than arrange phrases in a normal and accepted way , the authors change the word order to establish more emphasis and or rhythm in the relationship. Whereas the father-son relationship somewhat differs in the two poems, both narrators think back to a defining moment during their boyhood. Narrated years after the event, the speaker in Those Winter Sundays tends to appreciate these moments even more. The phrase What did I know (14) is repeated to highlight the fact that the child did not understand the true meaning of being a father (Gallagher1). Referring to loves offices as lonely and austere is additional evidence that the fathers efforts went unappreciated by his family. Still, some mentions throughout My Papas Waltz such as the whiskey on your breath (1), and the hand à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ /was batteredà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ (9-10) are used. They could probably mean that the father was drunk or had anger problems, but many readers discover the poem to be cheerful (McKenna1). It is almost likely that the speaker tells the story to express and memorize his moment of fun with the father. In conclusion, the two poems represents on family relationships, particularly the link between a young boy and the father. Even though the details and tone make each poem unique, the main idea is similar. My Papas Waltz portrays how the speaker looks back at certain childhood episodes when he joyfully played with his father. In Those Winter Sundays, the narrator also mirrors how the father sacrificed for his family, but was never appreciated fully. Very similar experiences are conveyed due to the ability of the father to physically communicate to his son devoid of words. Roethkes speaker realizes that although his father was never a polished dancer, he took time to waltz with him, then a young boy. Father and son had a moment of fun, even though it hurt a little. Haydens narrator recalls the actions of his father each morning, lighting fire and polishing shoes. The speaker regrets greatly that he did not appreciate his fathers efforts. While the two poems are composed and read differ ently, the fundamental message transmitted is a valid immediate explanation of father-son relationship.

SNC Lavalin Reaction Paper

The investigation found senior SYNC executives guilty of breaching the firms' code of ethics and charged them with bribery, money laundering and fraud amounting to over $56 million. More specifically, Mr.. Pierre Daytime, Zinc's president, and Mr.. Riyadh Ben Sass, a former executive vice president, were accused of secretly funneling company money to Labia's Gadding family in order to secure projects in Libya and subsequently strengthen Zinc's presence in North Africa. Ethical Model: The primary ethical question that is to be addressed is: â€Å"Is it acceptable forCanadian companies to engage in facilitation payments to gain business in developing nations? † The active agents are Zinc's senior management, who knowingly participated in blatant acts of bribery and fraud, as well as the Libyan facilitation agents. I will analyze SYNC Lapin's actions using the utilitarianism model. The theory of Utilitarianism states that people should act in a manner that maximizes the total, co llective utility of their actions. Zinc's senior management would argue that they had to maximize shareholder value in order to maximize the total collective utility. Sing this OIC, the senior management felt it was important that they sourced work in all possible regions, in order to beef up their portfolio of projects. The senior management then expected this to directly translate into improved profits and higher share prices that would make shareholders and the board of directors happy. However, the senior management was also aware that certain nations, such as Libya, demanded facilitation payments for awarding projects in their countries. The management also knew that these payments were considered to be bribes and that they are deemed illegal in Scandal. While these measures resulted in an 87% appreciation in share price in the short run, (share price grew from $31. 92/share in April 2009 to $59. 8/share in January 201 1) Zinc's stock then proceeded to nose dive to a low of $35 once news of the bribery broke out [1]. This dramatic fall in share price was almost completely attributable to the negative emotion towards and loss Of reputation suffered by SYNC Laving as a direct result of their decision to engage in bribery. These executives did not account for the significance of upholding their firms' reputation before providing facilitation payments. Moreover, as a result of their fraudulent behavior, SYNC is now also prohibited from undertaking projects funded by the World Bank for 10 years Consequently, contrary to senior managements' intentions, SYNC suffered a reduction in share price combined with a loss in reputation. The above facts prove that Zinc's management did not maximize the collective utility of their shareholders but rather proceeded to ruin their reputation by partaking in actions of bribery. The above analysis clearly shows that SYNC failed to do good by its shareholders by engaging in facilitation payments. It is also important to consider a nd evaluate Syncs alternatives to bribery in this case. Bribes tend to have different definitions depending on the part of the world you are dealing with. While these bribes (aka facilitation payments) are considered a part of doing business in developing nations, such as Libya, they are illegal in Canada. An interesting perspective was raised in class defending Zinc's actions. What if Syncs facilitation payments were being used to build basic infrastructure and provide basic amenities such as schools and hospitals in the developing nation? This now raises the question as to whether facilitation payments are acceptable based on the activities being funded by these bribes. A number of valuable points were raised in class both defending and abhorring SYNC Lapin's actions. I am of the perspective that companies must always adhere to the stricter of their country or the country where they are doing business' rules as a guide for making ethical decisions. Consequently, I believe that firm s should not elect to work in regions where they are forced to bribe local officials to gain projects. Moreover, having irked as a project engineer at a competing engineering and construction firm, know that my company refused to do business in countries, such as Libya, where bribery was a requirement to gain projects. Our senior management and C-level executives were sticklers for winning and executing projects based on a fair and competitive bidding process that ensured the best candidate was awarded the contract.. While this approach to decision making might cause companies to lose out on certain projects, It will ensure that the firm's reputation is never tarnished. In the long run, company reputation, while being a â€Å"soft† measure, is one of the key factors in ensuring sustainability. Many world renowned companies have refused to pay bribes in foreign countries and have still managed to attain burgeoning profits while maintain a sterling reputation. For example, Shell refused to pay Venezuelan officials $35 million to maintain their license over a nickel mine It is interesting to note that Shell still owns and operates this mine in Venezuela and have never been threatened with any such facilitation payments since.

Pets Should Be Treated As A Member Of The Family

Should we treat pets like human beings? Some people believe that pets should not be treated like human beings because people spend too much money on their pets. For example, they spend money on their insurance, on their health and many more. In other hand, many people believe that pets should be treated like human beings. Those people believe that pets have emotions as human beings. I think that it is a right approach to treat pets as members of the family because pets share the same living space with us, bring us a lot of joy and emotions.People usually bring pets in their houses for various reasons. People with disabilities have pets which helps them in many different ways, for instance, dogs can provide help to the disable people in daily activities. Therefore, these people need someone like pets all day around to feel themselves secure. They need someone on whom they can rely when doing basic things such as crossing the roads or stepping down the stairs. These are the things that normal people do habitually however; for people with disabilities these are the challenges they have to deal with every day. It goes without saying that pets that help people to cope with everyday life are truly family members and should be rewarded for their sacrifice to human beings. Why then pets should not be treated like human beings if they share some of the characteristics that relate to humans? On the other hand, pets are not like any other animals in our planet. We should give them respect their dignity even if they are just animals. When Pets are ill should be given most care and love as we are giving it to our children. We have to give a certain portion of attention as we are giving it to our children. Pets are not that intelligent as humans but they feel that we love them and pay us in the same way by helping our life. In conclusion, I think that pets deserve to be treated as human beings since they help us to overcome difficulties.
