Modern Day Hero Essay -- essays research papers
In todayââ¬â¢s society, it is hard to know someone who another person can look up to as a hero. It takes a special quality and person for others to know they can look up to and follow without worrying about being lead astray. The modern day hero I have chosen is someone who not only is willing to lay his life down for another, but also is willing to fight for everyoneââ¬â¢s freedom. James A. Miller Jr. is that modern day hero; he is a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corp. For the last year, he has been overseas fighting for not only the lives of all Americans, but he is also trying to free the Iraqi Government and people. Growing up, I always thought of him as just my baby brother. After he joined the Marines in 1993, I have seen him grow into a young man who many look up to. Not only do my children and his look up to him, but many others do also. James is a smart, good-looking young man whom everyone enjoys being around. He is into hunting, fishing and being outdoors which are just some of his favorite hobbies. He loves spending time with his family and doing whatever he can with them when the time allows. James and all the men and women who are willing to serve and protect are the real heroes of our day and age. They should be commended for the service they provide. James is in charge of the Combined Anti-Armor Team. Being a section leader, he is in charge of 30 to 45 Marines, 8 Hummers, 6 machine gun variants and 2 tow variants, (TOW) is Tube launched Optical comm...

An Essay on Vanity Essay
ââ¬Å"Mirror, mirror, on the wall, whoââ¬â¢s the fairest of them all?â⬠this ever so famous line quoted from Disneyââ¬â¢s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs sticks to the back of our minds more often than expected. Modern day witches gradually start to emerge in our world with the same intention, or shall we say insecurity, as the witch in the fairy tale ââ¬â to have the satisfaction of being on top. Nowadays, more and more people, especially teenagers, begin to look in the mirror to see if they are satisfied with themselves. Vanity, which is being worthless and futile, causes this. When an individual feels worthless, he becomes insecure because he feels that he is not ââ¬Å"worth it,â⬠regardless if itââ¬â¢s true or not. This leads to even more troubling problems like fitting in the ââ¬Å"in crowd,â⬠attaining high self-esteem and self-confidence, and finding oneââ¬â¢s true identity. The feeling of worthlessness or simply called vanity leaves teenagers to have the craving to fit in. When one feels that he is not worthy, he seeks the attention of others and he feels that he needs their approval. What happens after this? Then, he tries doubly hard to fit in the ââ¬Å"cool crowdâ⬠by wearing the trendiest clothes, saying the coolest lines, and doing the meanest things. This may make him one of the ââ¬Å"cool people,â⬠but this evidently doesnââ¬â¢tââ¬â¢ make him commendable. Another common thing for trying-hard-to-fit-in teenagers to do is start the hazardous habit of smoking. Their very own peers may well become their very own adversaries because they are the ones who pressure them in taking up smoking. Eventually, these vulnerable teenagers lose their self-image in exchange for a place in the ââ¬Å"cool crowd organization.â⬠Being a teenager is indeed a very difficult part in the cycle of life. It can ruin your self-esteem and self-confidence in a second. For example, cool kids pick on the insecure ones for the fun of it. These kids laugh at nerdy-looking teens and snicker at try-hard-to-fit-in ones. Usually, the ones being laughed at and looked down upon are the ones having problems with vanity. Their sense of futility plus the kind of attention they get from others decreases their self-esteem to zero, thus, causing their self-confidence to drop. This shouldnââ¬â¢t be the case. The vainer a person is, the more he should do something about it, and the more he has to believe inà himself. In extreme cases, adolescents alter their very own persona just to please others. An evident example of this would be teens who steal so that their peers wonââ¬â¢t think of them as inadequate. They would rather be called ââ¬Å"conyoâ⬠than be of the standard class. The question here is why do they have to steal? People who steal arenââ¬â¢t contented with what they have thatââ¬â¢s why they make use of other peopleââ¬â¢s belongings and mark them as their own. By doing this, they would gain attention because their peers would commend them on the objects that they stole, which usually are expensive and classy ones. This is one of the persona alterations that vanity can cause. These common Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type of teens are pretenders. They live their lives superficially, pretending to be somebody that theyââ¬â¢re truly not. This is a real problem among adolescents. Since they are on the stage where they are able to intellectually contrast themselves with others, they feel that they should show another personality aside from their own so that they wouldnââ¬â¢t have to worry about peopleââ¬â¢s reactions to their true personality. They cover their faces with masks to keep others from finding out their true identity and to protect themselves from rejection. Because of their insecurity, they may never be able to find their true selves. They should take out their masks and show the world their true selves so that people may accept them for who they are, and not for who they are trying to be. To all those teenagers with problems regarding vanity and insecurity, you should be able to face your own fear of rejection so that you wouldnââ¬â¢t be living in a superficial world. Be brave enough to bring out your true identity because you should always give yourself a chance to prove that you are indeed ââ¬Å"worth it.â⬠They say that it is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that they are difficult. So dare to face your fears and dare to be true to yourself for it is only then that you would find inner peace and self-confidence.

Poverty and crime rates Essay
There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of breadâ⬠(Mahatma Gandhi). Poverty is being in a state that is extremely poor and basically inhabitable. The correlation between poverty rates and crime rates has been examined through many different perspectives and by many different people. The majority of people believe that crime rates are higher in more developed countries and lower crime rates in undeveloped countries. Personally, I believe the opposite that crime rates are higher in undeveloped countries and lower in developed countries. There are many factors that affect high crime rates in a deprived country. The factors that affect high crime rates the most are that people in a poor society can not afford what they wish, the crime rates are higher in poor countries because people are not well educated and lastly, the government of a developing country is not as strict compared to the government of a developed country. Therefore the crime rates are higher in an undeveloped country. There are many factors that affect crime rates the major one is poverty. Crime rates are higher in an undeveloped country rather than a developed country since people would tend to steal what they cannot afford. The first factor that would cause a person of a poor country to steal something is if they cannot afford what they want. For example, in Africa many people cannot even afford their personal and physical necessities. The small community of Africa cannot afford enough food to fill up their stomach for a single night and will therefore have to rob food for themselves and their family.. Another reason why people in a poor country would commit more crimes is since they cannot afford the luxuries that they desire. Even though luxuries are not a component of survival they still play an important role in self confidence. For example, Car theft is much more higher in South Africa compared to North America since the people in South Africa cannot afford the luxuries of Mercedes or Porsche and would therefore steal the expensive luxuries that they want to be equal to everyone else. Next, the people of lower income feel excluded from society since they feel that they do not ââ¬Å"fit inâ⬠with the rest of the community. For example, if one is wearing bum company footwear and the rest of the people in the community are wearing Nike company footwear then the person whom is wearing the bum company footwear would feel excluded from the rest of the society. This would cause the person of lower income to steal the expensive footwear just so they donââ¬â¢t feel excluded and higher their self esteem. Another reason why people who cannot afford what they want is due to the impact of jealousy on the lower income communityââ¬â¢s mind. For example, Kristopher Gutierrez beat one of his best friends after realizing that he had a relationship with his girlfriend Kristopher is charged for aggravated assault1. This shows that jealous rage can cause one to commit any crime for revenge. Crime rates are higher in countries with more poverty since people do not have proper education. Firstly, the education system in poor countries is more weak therefore people in those poor countries are not well educated and do not know whatââ¬â¢s wrong and whatââ¬â¢s right. For example, statistics show that 121 million children worldwide are out of education2. This shows that children whom are becoming uneducated by dropping out of school at such a young age are not able to realize whatââ¬â¢s wrong and whatââ¬â¢s right. These 121 children would not be able to pursue their future career and earn a respectable amount of money since they would not have knowledge about the opportunities that are available to them. This would cause the children to get involved into horrible thing such as theft and burglaries. Read more:à Essays About Crime Rate Increase Another reason that causes higher crime rates in a country is due to the weaker teachers in the poor country. The teachers have probably also committed crime in their life. This would cause the teachers with wrong knowledge to teach their students the same knowledge they have. For example, if a teacher has the knowledge that crime and theft is alright and acceptable this teacher would teach their students that theft and crime is acceptable then the students would go off thinking itââ¬â¢s okay and possibly even commit crimes. Another reason that affects higher crime rates in an uneducated country is due to the parents of the students that are also not well educated and are therefore not a good role model towards their children. The children learn these horrible things by their parents. Since each family has their own values the children consider these crimes to be acceptable. For example, the parents of a poor family would probably have to rob clothing for their children. When the children realize that their parents stole clothing for them they will follow their parents and do the same. Additionally, the government systems of poor countries are much less strict towards crimes. Such as, the police control officers donââ¬â¢t carry many weapons and devices since they cannot afford them. In Canada, the police officers carry many weapons around with them such as guns, knives and GPS systems compared to Africa police officers canââ¬â¢t carry many weapons around with them maybe only one and cannot afford to purchase GPS. This would cause the community to think that it is easy to get way with committing crimes. Also, the police would have less control over the criminal since the criminal would bribe the police officer with money and most commonly the police officer would fall into this. Another reason why a more undeveloped country with an easy going government system would commit more crimes is due to the laws and punishments which are not strict and the criminals would feel that the punishment is manageable. For example, in South African countries such as Botswana the government system is less strict compared to a developed country such as Canada. The laws in Botswana for crime is more easy going if you are caught speeding then you can bribe the officer for money although the law in Canada obviously does not allow you to bribe the officer. This proves that the laws in Botswana are much less strict in comparison to Canada. Another reason that affects crime rates in a poor country is due to the fact that people feel committing a crime is easy to deal with and the police force is less committed to their job since the officers know that they would not get in much trouble even if they do not perform their duty properly. The government is less strict. For example, the community of Botswana and Africa feel that it is easy to get away with theft. This makes theft a much more common aspect of their life since it is so easy to commit and so easy to deal with the punishments. If one commits a crime in Canada they feel guilty and very afraid of the horrible outcomes such as all of the punishments and years in prison they have to deal with. Therefore, the population of Canada would tend to commit fewer crimes in fear of the outcomes. In conclusion, the crime rates are higher in an undeveloped country and this is proven by many aspects. Firstly, since people cannot afford what they want. The people of some undeveloped countries cannot even afford the necessities for survival such as food. Also the people of an undeveloped country cannot afford the luxury that they desire they feel excluded from society which causes them to commit crimes to achieve what they desire and to ââ¬Å"fit inâ⬠with everyone else. Secondly, in undeveloped countries the society is not well educated. The population that is suffering through poverty does not know what is wrong and what is right. Therefore commit crimes thinking itââ¬â¢s okay to do. The students donââ¬â¢t have a good role model to look up to since the teachers and parents have also committed crime in their past and the parents do not realize itââ¬â¢s unacceptable to commit a crime. Thirdly, since the government system is very weak and not so strict in comparison to the government system of a developed country. Due to the fact that the government system is not strict in a poor country the populations of that poor country feel that it is easy to get away with committing a crime. Also, since the police force is less committed to their duty they become bribed very easily especially with money. Additionally, since the laws and punishments of an undeveloped country are not strict the community commits crimes easily. Overall, it is proven that the crime rates are much higher in a more undeveloped country. Works Citied Bennett, William J. , John J. DiIulio, and John P. Walters. Research Art paper essayEssay Writing Service
Research Art paper essayEssay Writing Service Research Art paper essay Research Art paper essayThe 19th and the 20th century were really bright and versatile in relation to various artistic movements. The abstract arts, which were so developed in the 19th century, were actually based upon three major movements ââ¬â Romanticism, Impressionism and Expressionism. Actually this was the period, when most artists received much more possibilities to realize their inside world, because the strong impact of the church, which was integral part of the artistic movements before, started to fade. Expressionist painters used this chance to develop drawing distortions and exaggerations along with rather intense colors (Gayford 15). The main driving force of their paintings was related to emotions, reactions to the actual experiences. à Matisse with his work The Yellow Curtain was getting maximum close to pure abstraction, using a deep yellow color as the key element of his painting. Some artists of this time were under strong influence of new mysticism religions and philosophies, the result of which were the first examples of geometric abstract styles, which continued their development and transformation in the 20th century. Post Impressionism, appearing in the 20th century was associated with the names of Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh. These talented artists are till the moment said to be the ones, contributed to the development of modern art. Henri Matisse as well as some other pre-cubist artists introduced revolutionary ideas into artistic works of France, bringing wild and multi- colored images, making their landscapes and portraits extremely expressive and free. The works by Matisse, van Gough, Gauguin are the brightest examples of how the artists of the 19th and the 20th centuries applied the non-naturalistic colors as the major means for revealing their artistic ideas and expressions. The name of Vincent Willem van Gogh is associated with Post- Impressionist movement, his works are said to be ââ¬Å"notable for its rough beauty, emo tional honesty, and bold colorâ⬠(Gayford 16). His personality was outstanding throughout his short lifetime, and his death remained a mystery, because he was said to be self-shot, however no gun was ever found. He produced a lot of landscapes, portraits, self portraits, most of the well-known ones, belonging to his final years of life. His art works are versatile enough due to the fact, that he has the chance to travel to London, Paris, where he discovered the movement of the French Impressionists. The southern part of the country had a deep impact upon him, because he could not imagine seeing so much sunlight in reality. This immediately found the reflection in the colors, he used in his paintings. This also helped him to develop his own unique style, which soon became recognizable. à The Starry Night is considered to be one of the most mature of his works. Researchers state that thus picture he painted not from his memory, but from the view from one of his bedroom windows. This view was depicted by the artist during different times of the day and under different weather conditions. ââ¬Å"The Starry Night is the only nocturne painting in the series of views from his bedroom window. In early June Vincent wrote to Theo, This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise with nothing but the morning star, which looked very bigâ⬠(Gayford 72). The play of blue and yellow colors, their contrast and at the same time their combination do have a strong impact upon the audience. It seems impossible to reflect the brightness of a star, but looking at this picture, the warm light of the faraway star is making your feelings sharper and more intense. Only decade after the death of the artist, his Neo-Impressionist paintings were presented in Paris and then in Berlin. As a result artists of both countries started to pay attention to his way of using brushstrokes and color. Some of the critics of that time compared the introduction of Van Goghââ¬â¢s works with a stroke of lightning (Wattenmaker 13). His non-naturalistic representation of colors and wild use of color evoke a real wave of emotions among other artists. In the year 1905 there appeared already two Expressionist groupsà the Fauves, a group of French artists, one of them being Matisse and another one in Germany, under the name Die Bruecke, one of representatives being Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Both groups started to create bright and full of color and expression pieces of art.Henri- Emile-Benoit Matisse was one of these artists, who was highly appreciated for his use of color and his originality in painting. He was a printmaker and a sculptor as well, however most of his time he devoted to painting. ââ¬Å"Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three artists who helped to define the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the twentieth century, responsible for signif icant developments in painting and sculptureâ⬠(Cowart and Fourcade, 7) . His famous work Le bonheur de vivre (The Joy of Life) is considered to be a serious step towards modernism. The distortions Matisse used in space presentation along with warm colors, able to hypnotize and penetrate into the atmosphere of real life joys, into another world of fantasies and sexual desires, evoke a lot of protests as soon as the painting was exhibited for the first time in 1906. ââ¬Å"Yet this painting was Matisses own response to the hostility his work had met with in the Salon dAutomne of 1905, a response that entrenched his art even more deeply in the esthetic principles that had governed his Fauvist paintings which had caused a furor and which did so on a far grander scale, tooâ⬠(Wattenmaker 20). The same like in the picture of Van Gough ââ¬â the leading color is yellow, but it covers only the central part. The play of colors is continued on the background, however mostly war m colors are used, which contributes to creating a peaceful atmosphere of love, of the deepest emotions, which are actual at this very moment and might have no further meaning some time later. The change of the colors was so unique in this painting, that the scientists studied the formation of them with the help of special chemical reactions of cadmium sulfide and the presence of chloride as catalyst.Eugene Henri Paul Gauguin also belonged to the movement of Post-Impressionist artist, but was highly appreciated only after his death, only then his experimental approach to color use and unique style of synthetics and combinations, which went far away from generally accepted norms of Impressionism, gained popularity. The works of Henri Matisse were considered to be under his strong impact. His style formed the basis for the Synthetist style, ââ¬Å"while his expression of the inherent meaning of the subjects in his paintings, under the influence of the cloisonnist style, paved the way to Primitivism and the return to the pastoralâ⬠(Wattenmaker 25). Gauguin was seeking for his unique style, he studied the artworks of other countries and cultures, like for example Africa or Egypt, trying to find his own niche, but constantly felt no satisfaction. Only at the moment of absolute disillusionment, travelling as a sailor to Tahiti and the Marquesas Island, staying to live there, brought a period of enlightenment to his artistic work. It is difficult to imagine, but exactly the primitive cultures on those islands revealed the different world and reality to the painter, which he tried to pass to his audience via non-naturalistic colors and a kind of primitive ways of depicting the objects. This probably was the moment, when he found the answers to the three questions from one of his most famous works ââ¬â Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? This painting should be read from right side to the left. The women with the child seem to symbolize th e beginning of human life, the middle group stands for usual everyday life of most people, and finally the left part is the reflection of death. There is again the central yellow color, which seems to be standing for life ââ¬Å"processesâ⬠, however on the contrary to the previous artists discussed, there is a lot of cold colors in use, probably in order to show the contrast between life an death, between existence and non-existence.Overall, the works by Matisse, van Gough, and Gauguin are different and exploring various themes; the real feature, which does unite these artists ââ¬â is their fresh and unique styles, absolutely unusual use of colors and manner of transmitting of their key messages with the help of non-naturalistic color use.

Dr. Alex Shigo Biography - Arboriculture
Dr. Alex Shigo Biography - Arboriculture Dr. Alex Shigo was widely considered the father of modern arboriculture and a university trained tree pathologist. Dr. Shigos study of tree biology led to a broadened understanding of compartmentalization of decay in trees. Shigos ideas eventually led to many changes and additions to commercial tree care practices and the now accepted way to prune a tree. Full Name:Ã Dr. Alex Shigo Date of Birth:Ã May 8, 1930 Place of Birth:Ã Duquesne, Pennsylvania Education: Shigo received a bachelors of science degree from Waynesburg College near Duquesne, Pennsylvania. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Shigo continued his study of botany, biology, and genetics under his former biology professor, Dr. Charles Bryner. Shigo moved from Duquesne and continued his education at the University of West Virginia, where he received a combination Masters / Ph.D. in pathology in 1959. U.S. Forest Service Career: Dr. Shigo started a career with the United States Forest Service in 1958. His earliest assignment was to learn more about tree decay. Shigo used a newly invented one-man chainsaw to open trees in a way no one else had, by making longitudinal cuts along the stem rather than transverse cuts across the stem. His tree autopsy technique led to many important discoveries, some of which were and are controversial. Shigo believed that trees are not made up of mostly dead wood but have the ability to contain disease by creating compartments. Shigo became Chief Scientist for the Forest Service and retired in 1985. Date of Death:Ã Dr. Alex Shigo, 86, died on October 6, 2006 Circumstance Surrounding Death: According to the Shigo and Trees, Associates website, Alex Shigo died on Friday, October 6. He was at his summer cottage at the lake {Barrington, New Hampshire}, going to his office after dinner when he fell going down the steps, landing on the patio, and died from a broken neck. CODIT: Shigo found that trees respond to injuries by sealing the wounded area through the process of compartmentalization. This theory of compartmentalization of decay in trees, or CODIT, was Shigos biological brainstorm, leading to many changes and adaptations in the tree care industry. Instead of healing like our skin, an injury to a tree trunk results in surrounding cells changing themselves chemically and physically to prevent the spread of decay. New cells are produced by cells lining the cut area to cover and seal the injured area. Instead of trees healing, trees actually seal. The Controversy: Dr. Shigos biological findings are not always popular with arborists. Shigo disputed the validity of many techniques that the arboricultural industry has used for over a century. His work proved that old techniques were shown to be unnecessary or, even worst, harmful. In Alex Shigos defense, his conclusions have been confirmed by other researchers and are now a part of current ANSI standards for tree pruning. Bad news is, many commercial arborists continue to perform flush cuts, toppings, and other practices that Dr. Shigos research shows to be harmful. In many cases, arborists perform these practices knowing they are harmful, but believing their business cannot survive by practicing their craft under Shigo guidelines.

Diversity and Equal Opportunities with Curriculum links Essay
Diversity and Equal Opportunities with Curriculum links - Essay Example The concept of equality introduces a complex and dense legal framework, in spite of its aim of harmonizing and simplifying the labyrinth of discrimination law. This legislation has been the conclusion of a long procedure, involving discussion with several researchers. The Equality Act is also the result of political movement by organizations that work for equality. The Equality Act is an important example of legal improvement that is both the result of a movement of grass roots towards entrenching equality rules, with legislation that will support equality rules in the wider community for bringing parity among all citizens in a country.à Ethical values support sustainable growth, which promotes the concept of equalities, by: Creating clear conditions for goods and services which identify those ethical values. Considering the ethical qualifications of potential suppliers, as well as specific fundamentals as part of the evaluation criteria where suitable. Requiring dealers of goods and services to give ethically options, and being willing to allow the further costs where these can be genuinely justifiable. Undertaking the ethical assessments that recognize which parts of the ethical Policy apply to a particular procurement and evaluate what impact those policies must have one process of procurement. In this context the act of ethical impact assessment as a co-coordinator of every other aspects impacts the assessment. Stereotypes cause assumptions and conclusions based on a person's gender and race preferences. Making such assumptions and conclusions in turn leads to discrimination. Stereotypes can be about religion, race, gender, disabilities, age, geographical locations and income. This practice has its origin in discrimination and is an unjustified and negative approach based on a personââ¬â¢s class or groups identity deriving either during past individual experiences or preconceived incorrect beliefs. It contains having an approach, perception or opinion about a group. Stereotype is a mental image developed as an effect of a myth or a misconceived notion. People donââ¬â¢t often realize the expression of their prejudices. Stereotyping is a finishing point and can be described as the act by which people imagine or recall an information regarding others based on their religion, race or other considerations. Discriminating and stereotyping against a certain class or a certain group of individuals that are mostly protected by law, not only influences the base line revenues of the place of work, but also decreases morale. It also discourages employees, limits the ability of recruiting and constraints the possibility of retaining talent. All these issues will not only reduce efficiency, but also subject the organization to legal proceedings that may cost millions of dollars in settlements and disciplinary damages, with the further risk tarnishing its image forever. Such practice can be extremely detrimental in the case of small and med ium sized enterprises (SEMS). The population of students in different schools is highly diverse, and this group is likely to rely on generalization. These students differ from one another in many ways such as in culture and language environment, socioeconomic position, family histories, mobility, previous school experiences, and educational courses.
